With the barbell, increase throughout when possible. Starting lighter and taking gradual increases will reinforce better technique with heavy weight.
With dumbbell try and keep the a higher weight sustained. Technique is less of a limiter, so you can get more sustained work in. An Rx weight would be between 55-80 for men and women between 35-50.
